Within the National Plan for Research, Development and Innovation, our Institute is performing fundamental and applicative researches, under the coordination of the Academy for Medical Sciences, within the field of aging pathology

- Study on sensorial defficiencies and global functionality of affected aged people; methods of medical, psychologic and social support for these people:
- Finding out prevalent sensorial disorders of aged people;
- Finding out the degree on which sensoriality disorders may affect global functionality of aged people;
- Finding out the needs of medical & social interventions, both curative and preventative, to support aged people who have visual and auditive disorders (especially pointing on secondary and tertiary prevention, as primary prevention limits basically to delaying disorders)

Aspects of health and functionality of nonprofessional people caretakers for aged people

Epidemiological studies on transmissible diseases of aged people (tuberculosis, epidemic hepatitis, etc.)

- Study of aspects of psycho-social adaptation within aging process: third-age distress:
- most specifical events and situations of this age;
- resources, capabilities and abilities to confront stress sources (adaptative resources), specific strategies used in view to reduce disadaptative consequences due to existential happenings;
- adaptative consequences due to the confrontation to stress sources (adaptative styles), disadaptative consequences (main factors that block or disturb optimal adaptative processes, cognitive and emotional distorsions);
- external resources of confrontation (social support as moderator of disadaptative effects).
- Studies on the characteristics of self-image and self-concept of aged people as an adjusting function to prevent and alleviate negative consequences of aging process, and to maximize the efficiency of psycho-social adaptation at second- and third-age.

 Analysis of medical and social assistance of aged people in view to structure proper assistance programs.

Guide and technical support of gerontology and geriatry activities in other institutions, regarding social gerontology, in cooperation with Institute's clinical sections sections.
